Over 500 student volunteers at 2024 Open Day!
Student participation is a vital element in providing an authentic insight into College life.
A significant number of student volunteers were Tour guides, welcoming visiting families and escorting them around the College on a tour. Our student-led tours are a highlight of Open Day. Other volunteers assisted with Subject areas.
The Head of Primary School wrote an article in Tolle Lege thanking Primary students for their involvement on the day:
The adage that you do not need a badge to be a leader was very evident at Open Day recently, with more than eighty boys acting as class representatives, eager and enthusiastic to share their expertise to prospective parents and their sons. Only being at the College for 6 weeks and willing to buy into our culture of service for over 3 hours, says a lot about their sense of belonging and connection to the St Augustine’s community. I was extremely proud of all the boys as they highlighted the many and varied innovative, engaging, and relevant activities that they experience, on a daily basis. They talked expertly about Block and Python Coding, 3D printing using Tinker cad, as well as highlight the Primary School’s focus on Writing and the explicit instruction around word, sentence, and paragraph level grammar. Another group of boys confidently explained the purpose of seed dispersal helicopters which our visiting boys flew off the upstairs balcony. Others played scissors, paper, rock with our micro bit mini-computers and used Co-spaces to view 3D worlds.
One group of boys had the opportunity to hand out a 3D model of the College emblem, represented by a red heart pierced by an arrow, symbolising God piercing our minds and hearts and calling us to continual growth of faith, hope and love in our lives. Thank you to Fr Tan for assisting these boys for the entire 3 hours, while they handed out more than 140 hearts, along with 140 explanations as to the meaning behind them.
I would like to thank all the teachers and the volunteers for combining to promote what we do well, which is to provide an authentic example of relationships built on Truth, Love and Community, the values that are visible signs of an Augustinian education. Watching and listening to the boys interact with their teachers is evidence that boys feel safe, valued, and loved.
